The University of Granada hosts students from 39 secondary schools in a new edition of the PIIISA project

The University of Granada, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and the Territorial Delegation of Educational Development of Granada have joined forces to allow young students to develop a research project in laboratories guided by professional scientists.

The PIIISA project (Project for Initiation to Research and Innovation in Secondary Education in Andalusia) kicked off on Wednesday, January 17th. Its aim is to offer secondary school students a modern and innovative way to learn and interact with science and research methods. PIIISA introduces students from secondary schools in the province of Granada to the concept of research and its processes, allowing them to get involved in projects led by prestigious scientists. This firsthand experience with the scientific method and the research process enables them to explore their potential interest in pursuing a scientific career.

This year, 39 science projects will be developed, with 33 of them guided by the University of Granada, involving 250 students from high schools across the province. The project consists of three laboratory sessions and a final congress held between January and May, during which students will present their projects and findings.

Margarita Sánchez Romero, Vice-Rector for University Extension, Heritage, and Institutional Relations at the University of Granada, and María José Martín, Delegate of Territorial Educational Development and Vocational Training, and University, Research, and Innovation in Granada, were present at the opening ceremony. Sánchez Romero highlighted the work carried out over the past 12 years, aiming to familiarize secondary school students with research processes across various fields of knowledge. PIIISA, she emphasized, involves the participation of over 300 researchers from the university and CSIC.
