The University of Granada and the Sierra Nevada Natural Space have held, from July 22 to 24, the third consecutive edition of the Lagunas de Sierra Nevada conference. Framed in the citizen science campaign “74 High Mountain Glacier Oases” and financed by the LifeWatch Smart Ecomountains project, they are specially designed to bring and involve citizens in the world of high mountain research.
The organization of the conference has been structured in two parts distributed over three days and based at the Sierra Nevada University Hostel. During the first day, the general theme of the conference was addressed through different talks, this year focused on the use of remote sensing tools to estimate the production and biological diversity of the lagoons. The rest of the days have taken place entirely in the mountains, where eight multidisciplinary teams made up of scientific personnel and mountaineers, accompanied by agents from the Sierra Nevada Natural Space, have been distributed throughout the main valleys of the Sierra Nevada to sample a total of 50 glacial lagoons over two days.
