The Palacio de la Madraza has inaugurated the exhibition Global Change Observatory Sierra Nevada, which shows the project of the same name, OBSNEV for short. This is a programme whose aim is to jointly develop a long-term ecological monitoring programme, documenting and making the information obtained available for use by environmental managers, researchers and the general public.
OBSNEV has the participation of the University of Granada and the Department of Sustainability and Environment of the Andalusian Regional Government. The UGR provides a large interdisciplinary group of researchers who also contribute with the results of their research and the scientific supervision of the monitoring programme. OBSNEV provides scientific rigour and international contrast to coordinate the work of very diverse teams. The exhibition is curated by Regino Zamora, Professor of Ecology at the UGR.
The Sierra Nevada Global Change Observatory shows the wide repercussion of the Observatory’s activity in the media, as well as its main publications, which present the most relevant results of global change monitoring in Sierra Nevada and highlight the multidisciplinary nature of its activity, as well as the wide spatial and temporal extension of the research and monitoring carried out in Sierra Nevada. It also highlights the importance of citizen science (collaboration of society in scientific research) and new technologies, such as remote sensing, for the monitoring of essential biodiversity variables related to the composition, structure and functioning of ecosystems. Finally, the significant international impact of the Sierra Nevada Global Change Observatory since its creation in 2008 is highlighted, as well as the influence of its activities on public policies at regional, national and international level.
