Cordobeses of the year 2022: María José Polo

The professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Córdoba has been the first woman in Spain to receive the International Hydrology Award. She has been a full professor at the Etsiam since 1998.

The jury of these awards, recently convened, has taken into account her outstanding research and academic career, which in 2022 led her to be awarded the International Hydrology Prize, granted by the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, jointly with UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization.

Polo, who is the second female professor of Hydraulic Engineering in Spain, has been the first woman in the country to receive the International Hydrology Prize. She is also the Vice-Rector for Scientific Policy at the University of Córdoba and leads the research group on Fluvial Dynamics and Hydrology at UCO, focused on the study of hydrological processes in Mediterranean basins and snow dynamics in the context of hydraulic and hydrological processes in the Mediterranean mountains, a scientific work that is particularly relevant due to the severe drought currently affecting the region.
