Air quality measurements conducted with a mobile unit from the University of Granada show that certain pollutants occasionally exceed the values measured at the Granada Norte traffic station

The University of Granada (UGR) is contributing to the diagnosis of air quality with measurements being conducted in various locations across the city to study the impact of the implementation of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

The Atmospheric Physics Group (GFAT) at the University of Granada has been conducting an air quality measurement campaign in various locations around the city of Granada. The aim is to explore the representativeness of the air quality monitoring stations operated by the Andalusian Regional Government. This is to determine if these stations adequately cover the diverse situations that may arise in air quality in the city’s surroundings. Initial results suggest that in certain locations, certain pollutants may occasionally exceed the values measured at the Granada Norte traffic station, which has exceeded the limits established by European legislation and the World Health Organization.

The Atmospheric Physics Group conducts its activities at the Andalusian Institute for Earth System Research (IISTA) and has a track record of over 30 years in studying the atmosphere, including aspects of air quality. GFAT has contributed to various scientific publications and reports on air quality diagnosis, providing a better understanding of air quality in Granada. Since September 2022, GFAT has had a Mobile Atmospheric Observation Unit (Fig. 1), acquired under the project Thematic Center on Mountain Ecosystems & Remote Sensing, Deep Learning-AI, e-Services University of Granada-Sierra Nevada (Lifewatch-2019-10-UGR-01). This equipment, operated within the framework of the Singular Laboratory of the University of Granada AGORA, was previously used for studying air quality in the Alpujarra region, with a focus on the Barranco de Poqueira area. After completing that work, it is now being used in this project in Granada and the LEZ.
